A QUiRK’S JOURNAL: OPEN UP

IMG_0564

I classify myself as a selective mute: I don’t speak unless I feel compelled to by events happening around me or if I feel comfortable with whoever is near me. If we’re cool, you’ve gotten my goofy ratchet side – be thankful because I don’t bestow that unto everyone I come across.

Not everyone deserves it.

Still, as I get older I’m learning that opening up is vital to my growth as a person in every aspect: professionally, personally, emotionally and spiritually. I have to know that somebody out there feels me and I’m not going to get the chances I feel I deserve if I don’t give a little of my true self in everything I put into the universe.

I want to be a part of great things, things that my kids will look at and say, “Mama, you so damn dope though”, which in turn I’ll say, “thanks but you’re not cool enough to curse in front of me yet so pump your brakes.”

It’s going to come – with focus, determination and tunnel vision my dreams will come into fruition.

Step one: OPEN UP

QUiRK TUNES: MY 2011 IN SONG

Music drives my being; I can’t go a day without my earbuds being the vessel from my musical device to my heart. This playlist isn’t one that showcases my favorite songs; it’s a playlist that evokes the varying emotions I experienced in these last twelve months. Yes, most of it is emotional but it’s true to form, that’s for damn sure. Share in my heart’s songs and feel this shit with me!

I’m definitely looking forward to 2012 being less emo and more prosperous in every way. Here’s to you, 2012: you better treat me right.

THE QUIRK’S FAVORITES: STACY BARTHE

With 2011 wrapping up in these last days, it’s time to recount the music that has had the most impact on me – and hopefully yourself, if you’ve heeded my multiple recommendations.

Up first is SURF CLUB’s resident R&B songstress STACY BARTHE.

R&B has been faltering lately, let’s be frank: if you’re not into a certain type of artist – which is all across the spectrum – your palette has been left with a lack of flavorful music that makes you FEEL. STACY BARTHE is sure to change all of that with her smoky tone and bittersweet lyricism about the loss of love and ways of coping. If you’ve never been hurt before, you couldn’t fathom the meaning of most of her material; for those who have, they know the feeling well. STACY has managed to effectively transcribe a wounded heart’s conversation with the brain and it producer of the year, HIT-BOY, has composed complementary instrumentals to make it all gel. The result of this was SINCERELY YOURS, an eight-track EP that reads from the book telling of a broken heart. Her songwriting skills has earned her credit with pop’s biggest artists (BEYONCÉ, RIHANNA, BRITNEY SPEARS), but her own heart’s song will be the one to rule 2012.

It’s finally here! Brain Gang Blue dropped his first solo EP, NUMB, in the wee hours of the morning yesterday and you can cop it right here. It’s a sound project filled with eclectic beats and definitely worth the listen.

Happy Holidays from QUiRK TALES!

It really is the most wonderful time of the year because Christmas is upon us! Even more so, 2012 is just around the corner meaning we must wrap up 2011. It’s been a good year for my music library and I’m sure it has been for you, too.

Before we kick the new year off, I’ll be gifting you with the 25 most dynamic songs (to my life) of 2011 via the lovely folks at Spotify. I’ll also be giving you all my picks of five breakthrough artists of the year next week, so be on the look out for that.

QUiRK TALES will have some great things on the horizon these next twelve months and I can only hope that you’ll be along for the ride.

THE SECOND COMING: QUiRK TALES!

Well, well, well! Welcome to QUiRK TALES, the revamp of itstheCOOL. I’m here to give you guys my thoughts on things happening in the music industry while exposing you to new things. They may be new to you and they may not; ultimately, I post what I like and what I endorse no matter who it may be. Don’t be alarmed if you spot a few artists that you may deem as invalid to your ears.

Just skip that post =)

I have some great things lined up for you, so I hope you stay locked in and help spread the word. Feel free to take a look around at what I’ve done before, but just know that it’s just the beginning!

COMMENTARY: EVERYONE CAN’T RIDE THE HOV LANE – A NEW ARTIST’S STRUGGLE FOR SENSE OF SELF

I have a co-worker that is a true hip hop head and is strongly against anything WIZ KHALIFA, BIG SEAN, KID CUDI, and pretty much anyone signed to G.O.O.D. Music with the exception of MOS DEF and PUSHA T (COMMON was just signed to Warner Bros. Records); he’s into deep rap and listens to a lot of underground stuff, which is cool. I’m all for that because I like to hear something different more often than not.

I ask him what he has against the artists I listed off above and he says they have no lyrical skill or content whatsoever. He has a right to his opinion, so I respect it. I strongly disagree with it and we debate every day but I respect his opinion. Yesterday, we were getting ready to leave work when the intro to JAY-Z’s Blueprint 3 album began to play from our iPod dock. He says:

So you mean to tell me that all these new cats are messin’ with this guy right here?

I immediately yelled out NO! “When did I ever say that they were better than Jay-Z?” I asked him and he couldn’t give me an answer. I continued to say, “Nobody will ever be able to touch Jay-Z’s legacy because it’s his. If there were a bunch of Jay-Zs running around the industry, shit would be lackluster as shit.” People think that every rapper needs to be Jay-Z: have punchlines for days, good content, stellar beats, etc.,etc. That’s not the case.

QUICK UPDATE: REAL Gs MOVE IN SILENCE LIKE…

…well, YOU know the rest! Just because the updates been slowed over here at itstheCOOL a bit doesn’t mean I’ve been idle by any means. First off, we have a logo! Check the top corner; kinda snazzy, huh?

Second, I’ve been reading up on a few things I’d like to feature here but I feel like I need some research out on the “field” before I do so, hence me being so busy off the blog lately.

Don’t forget that I am still looking for votes for Vibe’s Ultimate Blogger contest! Voting ends April 16th; it’s a fun competition and I won’t die if I don’t win but it’s great that you guys have an opportunity to show your support for itstheCOOL in such a major way. Spread the word!

Once again, I’m reevaluating what I’d like to feature here. I’m not looking to copy anyone else because I think I have a pretty unique style over here. I just post stuff that I like: mainstream, underground, and otherwise. I don’t want to get stuck where there’s never anything to post. There’s ALWAYS someone out there tickling my fancy and I’ll be sure to stay hungry to find those things to share with you all.

Thanks for sticking around and I hope you keep coming back to check all things COOL. Until next time!
