Here at QUiRK TALES!, we’re all about supporting small businesses – especially small businesses who make dope shit that we can rock on the regular. I’ve had the privilege of tracking some great clothing lines this year; here’s a quick recap of that!

+ CHAD KOOLINGTON: This line, created by CORNELL LA’FLARE, was my first interview for the blog so I’ll always be appreciative to CORNELL for allowing me to share his story with my readers. I love penguins and I love t-shirts, so it was obviously love at first sight for me and the CHAD KOOLINGTON line. Its message was dope and poignant to the upcoming generation who is all about expressing themselves through their style, which is undefined by previous designers. Not targeting a specific demographic, CK strives to get consumers to essentially embrace the “fuck it” factor within – so to speak. Raheem DeVaughn and CyHi Da Prince rock CHAD KOOLINGTON, so fall in line and don’t miss out.

+ ILTHY: Cleveland’s known for producing extraordinary rappers and a basketball phenom; however, that isn’t all that the city has to offer. ILTHY’s cartoon designs of popular pop culture fixtures combined with a t-shirt quality that is comparable to the softest of pillows was enough to catch my attention this spring and I never regretted that purchase. The end of 2011 found the clothing line opening their very own flagship store, which is major for any budding clothing line. If I’m ever in Cleveland, I’m definitely stopping by to check Glen and the guys out. Here’s to a successful 2012 and beyond!

+ DEADLINE LTD: Upon seeing spokeswoman SEIKO HUFFMAN in a Muhammed Ali crewneck, I had to research this garment and who it came from, so I could act accordingly and cop it ASAP. Unfortunately, the sweatshirt was sold out but I was introduced to DEADLINE LTD and haven’t looked back since. From “The Godfather” references to body outlines available in assorted colors, DEADLINE is all about the real and keeping it exactly that at all times. Ran between L.A. and New York City, their style is skater meets the streets – a concept brought together by the line’s co-owners Junbug and NA – and has prospered this year with celebrity endorsements by MISTAH FAB, WAKA FLOCKA, and NIPSEY HUSSLE to name a few. 2012 will only be better and bigger – I’m crossing my fingers that I’ll see NA and the guys down in Austin!

+ UNKOMMONKOLOR: This Dallas clothing line has controlled my life for at least the last two years and I am not angered by this at all. I met Bryan Blue and Jeremy Biggers – the co-owners of UNKO – (you guessed it) in Austin at Nice Kicks and was thrilled to see the coolest guys in Texas who have been responsible for upgrading my graphic tee game. The brand’s representatives and their love for art, photography, and music makes them dope and at this point, it isn’t a question of whether I’ll support them: it’s how much do I plan on spending when their latest line drops. By the way, UNKO plans on kicking off the new year with something extremely special on January 2nd – don’t miss out. Have those funds readily available to cop some dope shit because it will be dope.

A nice clip for BRAIN GANG’s BLUE and his track “Party On”. I don’t know how many times a day I say “swag me the fuck out” in frustration, but for it to be this song’s opening line I MUST fuck with it entirely.

Great direction by JEFF ADAIR and nice appearance by my favorite clothing line, UNKOMMONKOLOR’s SAM WITH THE HAIR!

Blue’s solo project, NUMB, drops in just hours and I’ll have it available for download right here. PARTY ON!

The Weeknd is all the rage these days as his mixtape/album/EP/compilation “House of Balloons” is taking the nation by storm. “High For This” happens to be one of my favorite songs, so it was only right that I post the video that Jeremy of UnkommonKolor shot for the single, which features Sam With The Hair (yes, you have to say the whole thing; it’s similar to A Pimp Named Slickback).

Anyway, the video’s unofficial but it fits both what images The Weeknd has put out in correlation to the music. Very provocative but tasteful so two thumbs up to the UNKO crew!

Overall, my experience in Austin was better than last year mainly because there was no one there to ruin my good time this go round. I didn’t get to attend nearly as many shows as I wanted to, thanks to the badge/wristband stipulation that were peppered throughout the festival.

Shit royally sucked and 95% of the staff I ran into were assholes about it too.

The shows I DID get into were pretty dope: I managed to catch the tail end of the annual Rumbler Lounge show at Peckerheads and peeped Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, and The Cool Kids; The Light Bar hosted a show that I caught Finally Famous alum SayItAintTone at and Big Sean was there to support as they wound up performing “My Closet” together (DOPE!); At Suite 101, there was a showcase but I only stayed for one act (Hank & Cupcakes) that I may end up profiling sooner than later; the grand finale on my SXSW adventure was (of course) the Sore Losers set at Nuvola. Epic is the only thing that could describe that experience.

I went to a bar for the first time and even got a free drink after the bartender pitied me (he knew I didn’t want to be there), had a Rum & Coke for the first (and second) time, and saw a woman dancing topless to some rousing drum beats on 6th. Oh, Austin, you never let me down. I also hit the NiceKicks shop for the The Hundreds event and stayed long enough to meet nearly half my Twitter timeline, which was dope, at the Bun B birthday event. Jeremy of UnkommonKolor snapped my picture as I was wearing my “We Are The Fly” shirt and it was crazy how EVERYBODY knew it was me once they actually saw me; “you’re Steph” and other variations of that was all I heard, which was funny. I guess as much as I tweet, they’ve seen my default enough times to know my face off top. Good or bad thing…?

Next year, all badges all the freakin’ way. I mean that. My hotel (Habitat Suites) was pretty bomb though but I’ll be staying downtown so I can wander all I want and not have to get home by cab. Shit gets expensive mad quick. I won’t dwell on shit that didn’t work out in my favor because that would be negative. I’ll just say that next year is gonna be ON: I’m booking all my shit this fall, no lie.

If you EVER want to experience the epicness that SXSW brings to Austin on a yearly basis, start saving now and get your ass there next year! Don’t just read your social networking pages and wish you could partake in the festivities; come be a part of it and have the time of your life! There’s always something for everyone, so there’s no excuse. I wanna see some familiar faces next March =)

Yo, I wanna start by saying that NYU is a bitch ass campus and the people who work there are discourteous as ALL hell! So glad I never went there. After getting bullshitted on the tickets for this event, me and my girl Tiff hit up Big Sean’s road manager, Dilla, about getting on the list he and Sean make up for each show. After buggin’ the hell out of him, we get hooked up BUT NYU’s people say that the shit is bogus and they’re not honoring it. BULLSHIT! Dilla comes out and we call him over to let him know that they’re not letting us in even after he gave JANE (the angry chick who needed a damn drink or somethin’ to relax her damn nerves) the list he had, due to fire code regulations. The venue was oversold in the first place; how the fuck do you sell 400 tickets for a spot that only holds 150 people? Stop having so many hands in the pot and you’ll be all right [smh].

Anyway, the 007 mission breaks out and Dilla was determined to get us in so with the help of a great security dude (never got his name but THANK YOU!) and after bobbing and weaving through the back areas of the school…WE GOT IN THERE! Dilla is the man and our new best friend, I swear. He hooked us up. Now on to the show:
